Summary:

Children entering kindergarten will be the class of 2023.  What year are we preparing our learners for?

Whatever we choose to include in our current curriculum and in our school programs, we are preparing children for their future.  Based on her latest models and strategies in her soon to be released ASCD book- Curriculum 21: New Essential Curriculum for 21st Century Learners, Heidi Hayes Jacobs will share specific practices to provide your learners with a dynamic educative experience.  Over the two days, Dr. Jacobs will show participants how to upgrade content, skills, and assessments with contemporary replacements. She will take a step by step approach to examining each of the disciplines and consider three basic questions: What do we cut? What do we keep?  What do we create?  A special focus will be on new interdisciplinary themes and problems that should be integrated into the classroom ranging from sustainability to media literacy to globalizing the curriculum.

She will go on to challenge participants with new approaches to school program structures including newer schedules, new designs for both physical and virtual space, grouping patterns for students and the adults who teach them.  You will learn about new approaches that range from incremental changes in schools that are helping teachers meet in effective strategic grouping patterns such as targeted vertical teams and cross-disciplinary high school literacy teams.  But, she will also ask us to look to the future and new directions such a s virtual learning magnets and new directions in school architecture and schedules.   This will be a cutting edge program  showing  how we can harness technology and new levels of global communication to create a more engaging and personal experience for our 21st century learners.
