Summary: Using a direct-teach model, graphic organizers and a variety of games, participants will learn a multitude of ways to differentiate vocabulary instruction and help students grasp the concepts of measurement. The key to better conceptual science understanding and reading comprehension is understanding academic vocabulary.   Among the many tools and strategies presented, will be the use of journals. "Writing-to-learn" strategies increase your students' participation and improve their fundamental comprehension for learning.

During this session, participants will also learn how to:
•    set up and organize a science notebook,
•    help students develop and improve science journaling skills,
•    accurately record class information/data,
•    organize their writings in a meaningful order,
•    and assess student work to include insights and misconceptions.

Annette Venegas
As a science specialist at Region 20, Annette Venegas, M.Ed. is involved with science instruction, curriculum design, assessment, teacher training, and laboratory safety. Her goal is to improve the delivery of science instruction for all learners and to raise the scientific literacy of students, teachers, and community members through teaching and presentations. She has provided workshops and trainings throughout Texas, including sessions at the Conference for Advancement of Science Teachers (CAST), Texas Council of Elementary Science (TCES), Texas Science Education Leadership Association (TSELA), Texas Regional Collaboratives (TRC), Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU),  University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), and numerous districts statewide.

During her 18 years in education, Annette has worked with students pre-Kindergarten through college. Her current focus is on science education, with an emphasis on inquiry science, science literacy, and engineering for elementary students.
