Educating Culturally and
Linguistically Diverse (CLD) students is a daunting challenge.
The workshop Educating Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students
in the 21st Century provides an overview of special program development
for educating the CLD student. Participants will engage
with topics addressing special program development and educational
services for CLD students at the elementary level.
Dr. Lezley Collier Lewis will provide a comprehensive program overview of current bilingual and English as a second language program models. Best Practices models for educating CLD students will be identified, coupled with a Rubric for Readiness© to help school districts monitor and select second language learning program models. Dual Language program design, effective classroom instruction, and successful program practices implemented at the campus and district level will be highlighted. Participants will take from the workshop, a thorough understanding of best practices for educating CLD students
Dr. Lezley Collier Lewis is an educational consultant and state-wide expert on Dual Language education. She has been instrumental in instituting, developing and sustaining multiple dual language programs throughout Texas. Dr. Collier Lewis has presented at state, national and international conferences on a variety of topics impacting second language learners. She has worked to recruit bilingual teachers at the local, state and international level. Over her twenty plus years in education, Dr. Collier Lewis has worked in a variety of capacities in both the public and private sectors. She has served as a strategist for school districts implementing systemic change through strategic planning. Her teaching background includes P-16, bilingual/ESL education, public school district-level administration, and, most recently, the development of Multiple Exceptionalities of the CLD Student and special program integration. However, her greatest accomplishment is that of being a parent of a public school, two-way, bilingual immersion program graduate who is currently completing her teaching certification at Texas Tech University.
