Summary:

The National Reading Panel has identified Phonics (word recognition), vocabulary (word meaning), reading fluency, and reading comprehension as critical and necessary elements of any successful reading curriculum.  In this workshop Dr. Timothy Rasinski will present usable and effective strategies for teaching each of these instructional elements.  In addition, since reading and writing are so closely related, Dr. Rasinski will share engaging and effective strategies for teaching written composition – from words, to sentences, to complete texts.   Dr. Rasinski will address issues of assessment and will also work with the audience members on integrating these elements into an effective literacy program.

This workshop is ideal for teachers in grades 1-8 who want to learn more about effective teaching of reading to normal achieving students to students who struggle in learning to read.  Because many students who struggle in reading do not have sufficient word recognition skills, vocabularies, fully developed reading fluency, do not have many comprehension strategies at their disposal, and are less than proficient in their writing, this workshop is also appropriate for high school teachers who work with struggling readers.

DR. TIMOTHY RASINSKI is a Professor of Education in the Reading and Writing Center at Kent State University, Ohio, where he directs the reading clinic. His scholarly interests include reading fluency, word study, reading in the elementary and middle grades, and readers who struggle. He has served on the Board of Directors of the International Reading Association and is widely published in reading journals. Dr. Rasinski speaks all over the country to education audiences about reading fluency.

Who Should Attend: Elementary and Secondary Teachers.
